Skates are boots on wheels. Wear a pair and every step you walk is a skate.

Put a pair of skates on, or take them off. They are worn where boots are worn, so you cannot wear boots at the same time.
On smooth ground a skater is quicker than a walker, and no match for a vehicle. Rough ground slows you, and ground your wheels cannot roll over slows you more. You can fall on any step. Stairs and ramps are the worst, and so are rain, a heavy load, drink and being worn out. A fall costs you the step and a moment on the ground, and it hurts. Some pairs are armored. You cannot climb in skates.
