The Ophirian League: Suburba's salvage traders, a respectable professional association, and a cartel.
Orderly Commerce
The Ophirian League finds any comparison with the other groups of Suburba insulting. By its own charter, it is a professional association founded to keep commerce in Suburba orderly.
Its merchants have made their fortunes from whatever scavengers drag home from the world above. The League certifies where salvage came from, keeps standards of assay, gives credit, settles contracts, runs auctions, and connects salvage to buyers all over Deshret. It also fixes prices, blacklists rivals, corners markets, and has arranged enough convenient bankruptcies that most independent traders eventually discover the virtues of membership. Just like any good cartel.
Princes and Serjeants
At the top are the Merchant Princes, fabulously rich by Suburban standards, and surrounded by factors, clerks, brokers, debtors, and clients.
Then there are the Serjeants. Unlike the militias and hired muscle of the other factions, Serjeants are salaried professionals, trained and equipped at the League's expense. They guard warehouses and auctions, escort valuable salvage, travel with the Merchant Princes, and step in when a business dispute threatens League interests. Serjeants work hard at looking respectable, but that is mostly for show. They are thugs pretending to be something they are not.
